Vickers microhardness measurement for AlCu alloy irradiated with swift heavy ions

چکیده
Irradiation-induced hardening is an important phenomenon concerning the nuclear reactor safety, because it induces the embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel steels. This phenomenon, however, can also be applied for the modification of hardness of alloys. In the case of FeCu alloys, we have reported that GeV heavy-ion irradiation remarkably increases the hardness [1]. Volkov et al. have explained the phenomenon as originating from the nanoprecipitate nucleation of solute atoms, which is induced by the thermal spike in the track of swift heavy ions [2]. In this report, we show the result of microhardness measurements for AlCu alloy irradiated with 11.4 MeV/u Ni ions.

Evaluation of intermetallic coatings processed by PTA
Plasma Transferred Arc hardfacing (PTA) is an excellent tool for surface tailoring as it allows for the manipulation of coatings chemical composition. In particular in-situ alloy development can be achieved during the deposition of different powder mixtures. In this work powder mixtures of Ni-Al, Nb-Al and Fe-Al were deposited by PTA. Coatings were characterized for their mechanical features at...
متن کاملColor centers beyond ion range in LiF crystals irradiated with Ni ions
LiF crystals exposed to swift heavy ions exhibit unexpected coloration phenomena at a depth up to 3 mm beyond the ion range. The induced color centers were investigated by thermo-stimulated luminescence, optical absorption, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The crystals were irradiated with various ions from C to U at the UNILAC accelerator (see [1] and references therein). The...
متن کاملCharacterization of track-etched membranes by small-angle x-ray scattering
Track-etched membranes are polymer foils irradiated with swift heavy ions and subsequently wet-etched to create pores by dissolving defects formed along the ion trajectories. Under suitable conditions, the resulting pores are of cylindrical shape and uniform in size. Such membranes are commonly used for filtration or as templates for nanowires, grown inside the pores, e.g., by electrochemical d...
متن کاملConductive nanodots on the surface of irradiated CaF2
CaF2(111) single crystal surfaces have been irradiated with swift heavy ions under oblique angles resulting in chains of nanosized hillocks. In order to characterize these nanodots with respect to their conductivity we have applied non-contact atomic force microscopy using a magnetic tip. Measurements in UHV as well as under ambient conditions reveal a clearly enhanced electromagnetic interacti...
متن کاملFormation of swift heavy ion tracks on a rutile TiO2 (001) surface1
Nanostructuring of surfaces and two-dimensional materials using swift heavy ions offers some unique possibilities owing to the deposition of a large amount of energy localized within a nanoscale volume surrounding the ion trajectory. To fully exploit this feature, the morphology of nanostructures formed after ion impact has to be known in detail. In the present work the response of a rutile TiO...
